“Clouds” is the first song I wrote for Wake, my first EP. In this song, I wanted to pay homage to some of my favorite artists as well as develop my own musical style. Aside from the pantheon of classical composers I have studied, including Chopin, Debussy, Beethoven, and others, my musical interests way deeply in the realms of jazz, blues, R&B, film music, anime, and video game music.

The main inspiration for “Clouds” comes from my tough relationship with music. Ever since I was little, I’ve been trained to play other people’s music. In a way, my musical expression was always in a box: being controlled to play a certain style, a certain interpretation, or a certain method. To be honest, I grew weary of this tradition, and I wanted to break free.

Now, it’s time for me to share my personal story with music of my own. “Clouds” is a song for all the dreamers wondering how we can make it, and that feeling even after we try, it seems everything is still so far away in the clouds.

The sonic colors of the song come from my love of Chopin and Joe Hisaishi (the gentleman who composed most of the cinematic music for Studio Ghibli). The whimsical melodies and vocal phrases of both of these composers have a deep place in my heart, mind, and ear. I wanted to share that love through this song, as well as my approach to composition.
